General rules

For the time being, China Southern Airlines provides the following special services: wheelchair ramp (WCHR), wheelchair steps (WCHS), wheelchair cabin (WCHC), wheelchair onboard (WCOB), electric wheelchair consignment service, and services for unescorted blind passengers (BLND), deaf-mute passengers (DEAF) and passengers with service dogs (PETC) (for the deaf-mute, the blind). After buying tickets, the disabled passengers can log into the CSAir official website and apply for special services on the page Special Assistance Request.

These special services are only offered to applicants whose flights are undertaken by CSAir exclusively. If passengers have booked connecting flights or round-trip flights that involve other airline companies, please apply to the corresponding companies for similar services.

Certificate of Diagnosis

  • (1)In one of the following circumstances, CSAIR has the right to demand passengers show the Certificate of Diagnosis issued by the hospital recognized by CSAIR and signed by the doctor/physician for the passenger;
    • a. The passengers carry premature infant incubators on board.
    • b. Women with a single pregnancy of more than 32 weeks but less than 36 weeks;
    • c. Those who carry a portable oxygen concentrator (POC) that complies with the regulations and need to use it in flight and is physically tolerant;
    • d. Those who have applied for stretcher services;
    • e. Taking the flight poses potential risks to the passenger, or the passenger needs special medical care during the flight.
    • f. The passengers have contracted severe infectious diseases but will not infect others if proper preventive measures are taken.
    • g. Psychiatric patients who are considered stable by medical institutions or medical staff recognized by CSAIR and fit for flight after taking certain measures.
  • (2) A medical certificate or diagnosis certificate in triplicate: The medical certificate or diagnosis certificate shall be filled in with the passenger's condition and diagnosis results by a county-level, municipal-level or equivalent medical institution, signed by a doctor and sealed by the medical institution.
  • (3)Time limit requirements for medical certificate
    • a. A medical certificate shall include the conditions that must be observed to prevent the spread of diseases or infectious diseases. In principle, only a medical certificate issued within 96 hours before the flight departure is valid. In case of serious illness, it shall be filled and issued within 48 hours before the flight departure.
    • b. Medical certificates for persons with disabilities who do not require additional medical assistance during flights to safely complete their travel should be issued within 10 days prior to the departure date of the flight.
    • c. A medical certificate for a woman with a single pregnancy of more than 32 weeks but less than 36 weeks shall be filled in within 72 hours before a flight takes off.

Boarding Applications of Special (Invalid) Passengers

If a passenger applies for special services during the flights in ticket offices directly under CSAir or customer service center, boarding applications should be offered in paper form.

  • (1) Sick passengers, passengers who are required to provide medical certificates or diagnosis certificates, passengers who need to apply for wheelchair services and disabled passengers with service dogs shall fill in the "Application Form for Special Passengers" in triplicate to state that if a passenger worsens, dies or causes injury to others during a flight, the applicant shall bear all responsibilities.
  • (2)“Boarding Applications of Special (Invalid) Passengers” should be signed by the passenger in person. But if he/she is unable to do so, the signature of his/her families or guardians are also effective.
  • (3)CSAir is not excused from the liability of loss, damage or death of wheelchairs or service animals that disabled passengers have checked in China-US flights.

Accompanying Persons

  • (1)The companions should declare the companionship when booking seats, and tickets are issued separately. The companions should travel on the same plane as the disabled they accompany. 
  • (2)Accompanying persons should be able to take care of the disabled passenger(s) and help them to evacuate in an emergency. Accompanying persons should also sit next to the disabled passenger(s).

Gentle Reminder

All kinds of special check-in services (including online check-in, SMS check-in, self-service check-in) are inapplicable to special passengers and passengers who are required to provide other check-in certificates for verification (including important passengers, injured and sick passengers, disabled passengers, disabled soldiers (policemen), pregnant women, unaccompanied minors, teenagers and the elderly, passengers who need special meals, etc.), who shall bring their valid ID documents and other necessary certificates directly to the CSAir check-in counters of the airport.
