Wuhan is the capital of Hubei Province, the city's permanent resident population reached 9.78 million in 2010 [2]. The city is the largest one in central China, and an extra clustered city in the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River. The world's third longest river, the Yangtze River, and its longest tributary, the Han River, run through the urban area of Wuhan, and divides Wuhan into three parts, forming a pattern of tripartite confrontation between Wuchang, Hankou and Hanyang. The Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai wrote such poem: "When jade flute sound lingers at Yellow Crane Tower, plum blossom falls in river city in May", so Wuhan has been called" River City" since ancient time.

Wuhan belongs to subtropical monsoon humid climate, with abundant rainfall and sunshine. It has four distinct seasons represented by hot summer and cold winter. In the whole year, the average temperature in January is the lowest at 3.7 ℃; the average temperature in July and August is highest at 28.7 ℃. The summer lasts up to 135 days, and the spring and autumn each lasts about 60 days. As Wuhan is located in 30 degrees north latitude, the sun height in midday of the summer is up to 83°. Because Wuhan lies in inland, far away from the ocean, the surrounding terrain is like a basin which makes thermal collection easy and thermal dissipation difficult. Wuhan has many rivers and lakes, leading to much water vapor at night, combined with urban heat island effect and summer drought, the highest temperature in urban area can reach 42℃, resulting in sultry weather, so Wuhan is known as one of China's three furnaces. In early summer, the rainfall in rainy season is concentrated, with annual rainfall of 1,050~1,200 mm. The active accumulated temperature in Wuhan is 5,000℃ ~ 5,300℃, and the annual frost-free period is 240 days.
