Baggage Service Guide

What is the baggage?

The baggage refers to necessary items and other private properties in a proper quantity which passengers take for wearing, use, comfort or convenience during the flight. Unless otherwise specified, it includes registered baggage and unregistered baggage.

What baggage can be carried during the journey?

Kindly remind you that the quantity and category of baggage shall conform to our specifications. It is recommended that you categorize different baggage lists such as travel baggage list, long-distance flight baggage list and short-distance flight list etc. in your free time, so that you will not waste time in making preparations for next journey.

Do I have to register the baggage on the very day of the flight?

Yes. We are sorry that only the baggage on the day of the flight can be accepted.

May I bring the valuables into the cabin?

Yes, you can but you must take good care of you stuff including cash, jewelry, valuables, gold, silver, notes, securities and documents etc.

How to keep the valuables?

The valuables must be carried on by the passenger. The lost or damaged valuables inside the registered baggage will be compensated as common registered baggage.

How to bring medicines?

The medicines specified by national laws and regulations of CSN can be brought by passengers.

What items can not board the plane?

The passenger is prohibited from carrying or registering items including firearms, military or police arms (including main components) and their imitation parts; flammable and explosive items; toxic chemicals; perishable materials; radioactive items; controlled knives; strong magnetic items or items with strong pungent odor and other things endangering flight safety as well as other items forbidden to be carried or transported by national laws and provisions.

What shall I pay attention to when taking a flight to the United States?

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) may open the suspicious luggage and check the items inside, when you take a flight to the United States. You may use a special lock, which can only be opened by yourself and TSA employees, if you have to lock your luggage.

How to mark the baggage?

For the safety of your luggage, CSN will mark each of your baggage accordingly. It is not recommended that you mark the baggage. You need to register your luggage at the baggage counter and our staff will hang or paste a tag printed by CSN, with bar code, you name and flight No. etc. to your baggage.

What is the deadline for checking the baggage?

To ensure the safety, the baggage will be weighed and inspected. Therefore, the passenger with e-ticket or traditional ticket has to handle formalities for registering the baggage at the airport. The deadline for registering luggage is the time before the departure of plane. However, you must confirm that you have sufficient time to board the plane.

Why security check is a must before boarding the plane?

To ensure the personal and property safety of you and others and according to the China’s Civil Aviation Safety Inspection Rules, all the passengers and baggage must be checked. CSN will reject the boarding of passenger or baggage not passing the check and will not bear the possible corresponding loss.

What should I do when finding out that my baggage is among the lost baggage not claimed?

We are sorry for the loss or wrong delivery of your baggage due to our fault. Temporarily, the service for publicizing the list of lost baggage is not available. You may dial 95539 for customer service when encountering such problem.

May I view the status of the lost, wrongly delivered or delayed baggage on the Internet?

Yes, you may view the status of your baggage through CSN website with reference No., baggage tag No., telephone No. or certificate No.

Is the transport of baggage forbidden in a certain period of the year?

No.

Is the logistics service available?

Yes, the specialized logistics company of CSN will provide you with logistics service. You may contact the logistics company to collect and distribute your baggage in accordance with your requirements.

What are the preconditions of baggage tag through service?

The baggage tag through service can be provided at the departure airport when you take a flight form home to abroad and you have bought one ticket for these two voyages.

Which flight courses are governed by weight concept for baggage?

The weight system for baggage is applied to airlines except those of the United States, Canada and Europe.

Which flight courses are governed by piece concept for baggage?

The flight courses of China to United States, China to Canada and China to Europe.

Free Baggage Allowance

What is the “Registered baggage”?

“The “Registered baggage” is that handed over to the carrier by the passenger for care, transport and issuance of baggage ticket.

What is the “Unregistered baggage”?

“The hand baggage is that issued with baggage ticket and cared by the passenger with the approval of the carrier.

What are the restrictions on free baggage allowance?

1.The free baggage allowance (including checked and carry-on baggage) for all passengers of national routes is: 40 kg for first-class passengers, 30 kg for business class passengers and 20 kg for economy class passengers. Passenger with an infant-fare ticket is granted 10 kg of free baggage allowance.

2.Free baggage allowance (including checked and carry-on baggage) for all passengers of international routes: baggage transportation for international routes of China Southern Airlines adopt the weight free baggage allowance, except for China-America, China-Europe (excluding Russia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, Turkey, etc.) routes.

3.For China-America route, with an adult or child ticket, first-class passengers may carry three pieces of baggage free of charge and business class passengers may carry two pieces of baggage free of charge, where the sum of the three edges of every piece of baggage should not exceed 158 cm (62 in.) and the weight should not exceed 32 kg (70 lb.); high-end economy class and economy class passengers may carry two pieces of baggage free of charge, where the sum of the three edges of every piece of baggage should not exceed 158 cm (62 in.) and the weight should not exceed 23 kg (50 lb.). China-America and China-Canada routes adopt free pieces of baggage allowance. Economy class passengers may carry two pieces of baggage free of charge, where every piece of baggage should not exceed 23 kg (50 lb.) and the sum of the three edges of every piece of baggage should not exceed 158 cm (62 in.).

4.China-Europe routes (except the China Southern Airlines routes for Russia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, Turkey, etc.) adopt free pieces of baggage allowance. Economy class passengers may carry one piece of baggage free of charge, high-end economy class passengers may carry two pieces of baggage free of charge, and first class and business class passengers may carry three pieces of baggage free of charge, where every piece of baggage should not exceed 23 kg (50 lb.) and the sum of the three edges of every piece of baggage should not exceed 158 cm (62 in.).

5.If two or more passengers take a flight together to the same destination, their free baggage allowance may be totaled according to the standards of their ticket price levels if they check their baggages at the same time and at the same counter.

6.Passengers who change their cabin grade involuntarily are subject to the free baggage allowance of their original ticket price.

7.For the domestic legs of international transportation, the free baggage allowance of each passenger should be calculated according to the applicable free baggage allowance of international routes.

8.For special passengers, such as overseas students, laborers and sailors, please inquire about your free baggage allowance at the ticket office.

Is the baggage allowance different for different flight courses?

Yes, generally each passenger holding adult ticket or child ticket is entitled to a free baggage allowance: 40 KG for first class, 30 KG for business class, 20 KG for economy class. The infant paying for 10% of adult airfare is entitled to a free baggage allowance for 10 KG.

The flight courses of China to the United States and Canada apply piece concept. The passenger with economy class ticket is entitled to a baggage allowance for two pieces of baggage, each of which is less than 23KG (50 pounds). In addition, the total length of three sides is less than 158CM (62 inches).

The flight course of China to Europe applies piece concept. The passenger with economy class ticket is entitled to a baggage allowance for one piece of baggage, the one with premium economy class ticket is entitled to a baggage allowance for two pieces of baggage, and the one with business class is entitled to a baggage allowance for three pieces of baggage, each of which is less than 23KG (50 pounds). In addition, the total length of three sides is less than 158CM (62 inches).

Is the same baggage allowance system applied for the domestic flight courses and international flight courses?

Yes, generally it is the same except the flight courses (applying piece concept) to the United States, Canada and Europe.

What is the baggage allowance for flight courses to the United States and Canada? Is it same as that of other countries?

The passenger with economy class ticket is entitled to a baggage allowance for two pieces of baggage, each of which is less than 23KG. The passenger with business class ticket is entitled to a baggage allowance for two pieces of baggage, each of which is less than 32KG. In addition, the total length of three sides of each baggage is less than 158CM (62 inches).

The single piece of luggage weighing over 45 KG will be rejected.

The piece concept is also applied by Europe (one piece of baggage for economy class is free of charge),

And other flight courses apply the weight concept.

What are the preferential policies on registered baggage for members of CSN Sky Pearl Club?

If taking the flight adopting weight concept, the gold card member is entitled to additional baggage allowance of 20 KG and the silver card member is entitled to additional baggage allowance of 10 KG.

The gold card member or silver card member of CSN Sky Pearl Club taking the flight to Europe is provided with baggage allowance of an additional piece of baggage despite of cabin class.

Why is the overweight baggage charged?

Is the baggage allowance provided to children?

Yes. The baggage allowance to children is the same as that of the adult.

Is the baggage allowance provided to infant?

Yes. The infant buying an infant ticket is entitled to a baggage allowance of 10KG.

Is the baggage allowance provided to stretcher passenger?

Yes, the baggage allowance to stretcher passenger is 120KG. The conditions and processes of buying a ticket for stretcher passenger are special. Therefore, the baggage allowance is special.

Is the restriction on baggage the same in different airlines?

No. You can refer to the regulations of the airlines for details. 

Is the restriction on baggage the same in airlines sharing the code?

This is no uniform requirement, specific provisions for different airlines.

I booked a “first class” ticket. However, the ticket became a business class for some reason. Does the baggage allowance change under such situation?

If you booked a first class ticket and the cabin was changed involuntarily, the baggage allowance will still be kept as that for first class ticket.

Can I take lithium battery in the registered baggage? If yes, how many can I take?

No.

Carry-on Baggage

What is the “carry-on baggage”?

“The carry-on baggage refers to small items within the specified category and quantity and approved by the carrier to carry free of charge.

What is the “baggage ticket”?

“The baggage ticket is related to the registered baggage of passenger.

What is the “baggage tag identification”?

“The “baggage tag identification” is issued specially by the carrier to the passenger for identifying the checked baggage.

Why can’t some baggage be brought to the plane?

The carry-on baggage which can not be placed into the baggage cabin or under the seat will be accepted on the plane, in order to guarantee the normal activities inside the cabin and the safety of passengers.

What are the restrictions on carry-on baggage?

The passenger holding first class ticket may carry two pieces of baggage. The passenger holding business class ticket or economy class ticket can only carry one piece of baggage. The dimension of each baggage can not exceed 20x40x55 cm. The total weight can not be larger than 5 KG.

Which baggage can be registered though they can not be carried?

The baggage can be registered though they can not be carried include knives for livelihood, special knives, wines, tools for performance, other sharp instruments and blunt which may endanger aviation safety.

Can I carry the liquid?

Sorry, the liquid is not allowed.

Are infant carriage and infant food taken as carry-on baggage?

Each passenger can carry one foldable infant carriage into the cabin. The carry-on infant good and supplies can be brought into the cabin after they are shown and explained to the security officer.

How many lithium batteries can be brought in carry-on baggage?

The lithium batteries in cell phone and notebook computer etc. can be carried by the passenger.

What potable electrical appliances can be brought into the cabin?

The electrical appliances including digital camera, MP3, mobile phone, mobile phone charger, CD player and laptop, larger electrical appliance such as hair dryer etc. that can be placed into the carry-on baggage may be brought into the cabin with prior showing and explanation to the security officer.

May I board with hair spray?

No.

Overweight and Special Baggage

How to charge overweight baggage?

1.Overweight Baggage is the exceeding portion to the free baggage allowance of checked and carry-on baggage, and should be charged for overweight accordingly.

2.Please fill in the overweight baggage tag when paying for overweight baggage charge.

3.The rate of overweight baggage charge is 1.5% of applicable one-way economy class ticket on the day of billing per 1 kg, calculated in the RMB currency and rounded up.

4.Standard for Overweight Baggage Charge to American and Canadian Routes:

5.Standard for Overweight Baggage Charge to China-Europe Routes:

Note: In case that the baggage is overweight in more than one category, the charges should be added up. For example: the charge for the second overweight and oversized baggage is 450+1000=CNY1450.

What differences are there between the piece-system baggage and weight-system baggage?

The weight concept is applied by airlines except those to the United States, Canada and Europe which adopt piece concept.

Is there any upper limit on the weight of overweight baggage?

Yes.

Max. weight of unit baggage for domestic airline: 50KG

Max. weight of international unit baggage differentiating in flight courses: 45KG for flight courses to the United States and Canada

Max. weight of unit baggage for flight courses to Australia and Dubai: 32KG

Max. weight of unit baggage for other flight courses: 50KG

May I take golf clubs?

ok.

1: Golf requisites: one golf bag (containing golf ball and golf club) and one pair of golf shoes.

2: Charge standard:

a): Charge of excess baggage weight for each set of golf requisites less than 15kg (inclusive) shall be collected based on 6kg, and additional charge shall be collected for extra weight beyond the basis of 6kg.

b): Each passenger shall enjoy the preferential charge for only one set of golf requisites, and extra items shall be treated as normal baggage.

c): This charge standard is only applicable when the above items are not included in the baggage weight quota free of charge.

d): When there is excess weight beyond the baggage weight quota free of charge, charge shall be collected in accordance with the above special charge standard or the normal excess baggage weight standard, whichever lower. When the weight of the golf requisites is not included in the normal baggage weight, Charge of excess baggage weight for each set of golf requisites shall be collected based on 6kg. When the weight of the golf requisites exceeds 15kg, charge of excess baggage weight for the extra weight beyond the basis of 6kg shall be collected. When the weight of the golf requisites is included in the normal baggage weight, charge of excess baggage weight for the extra weight beyond the baggage weight quota free of charge shall be collected based on the actual weight of the golf requisites plus other baggage.

May I take skis or water skis?

Yes.

• As to the flight courses applying weight concept,

—-the special charge on each set of ski equipment will be equivalent to that on corresponding overweight baggage of 3 KG

—-each passenger may only take one set of ski equipment charged on such standard.

—-the lower one between the special charging standard above and common overweight baggage fee shall be applied if the baggage allowance is exceeded when including the ski equipment.

• As to the flight courses applying piece concept,

Ski equipment: One pair of skis, two ski poles and / or one pair of ski boots. The special charging standard on baggage exceeding allowable weight or size shall be applied. When exceeding the common baggage allowance, the ski equipment shall be charged 33% of related fixed charge per pax. One passenger is allowed to carry one set of ski equipment charged based on such standard. The exceeding part shall be charged as common overweight baggage.

May I take a bicycle?

Answer: ok. For international flights, it may involve the issue of declaration. As for the details, please contact the service hotline 95539 of China Southern Airlines.

Checked bicycle baggage regulations:

1: Bicycle shall be transported as cargo. Bicycle that could be transported as baggage refers to the single-seat and non-electric bicycle. Transport of such articles shall be agreed in advance by China Southern Airlines and they shall be placed in the cargo bay.

2: Bicycle transported as cargo must be completely packaged. The handle bar shall be rotated 90 degree and fixed. The wheels shall be dismounted and bound onto the bicycle. The tries should be flattened and bound onto the bicycle.

3: The bicycle weight shall not be included in the baggage weight quota free of charge and an additional charge of excess baggage weight shall be collected.

May I take a violoncello?

Yes, but you have to buy another position for your violoncello.

What should I do if the baggage is overweight or if I want to take special baggage?

When dealing with the formalities for registering, your baggage will be weighed. The overweight baggage will be charged according to the standard. Please dial CSN selling service hotline 95539 for solution if you want to take special baggage.

Under what conditions can surfing or wind surfing equipment be taken?

The surfing equipment belongs to special baggage and it shall be registered or carried with the approval of CSN.

May I take guns used for athletic contest?

The guns used for athletic contest belong to special baggage and they can be carried with the approval of CSN.

May I take an electric wheel chair? What should I pay attention to before boarding?

The electric wheel belongs to special baggage. You must contact us in advance before taking the flight. We will transport the electric wheel chair if you provide information related to the wheel chair, use up the electricity or disconnect power unit.

May I take a caesium atomic clock?

Caesium atomic clock belongs to special baggage. As it is a precision instrument, you must get the prior approval of CSN before we transport it for you..

May I take liquid food for infant?

No, but you can apply for special food or prepare milk powder on the plane.

May I take raw eggs?

Sorry, you can not take raw and fresh items to the plane.

Can I take a small oxygen bottle?

Sorry, the equipment containing oxygen can not be brought to the plane.

Animals

May I take the pet to plane?

Sorry, the pet can only be registered.

What are the formalities for registered pet?

The pet must be provided with effective health certificate and proof of rabies immunization, as well as the documents required in small animal transportation of countries along the way.

You have to sign an agreement for undertaking the risk of animal death.

Which kinds of animals can be brought into the passenger cabin?

No animal can be brought to the passenger cabin except the guide dogs.

What are the documents required to register pet?

The pet registered must be provided with effective health certificate and proof of rabies immunization, as well as the documents required in small animal transportation of countries along the way.

You have to sign an agreement for undertaking the risk of animal death.

How to charge for registering pet?

The small animal will be charged as common overweight baggage. The small animal and container can not be counted into the baggage allowance. As to the flight courses applying piece concept, the small animal will be charged twice of common overweight baggage. The dog trained to help the blind or the mute and deaf can be counted into the baggage allowance. Transportation of small pets is not available for issuing the declared value.

Dangerous Goods

What should I do to take my weapons with me?

In order to guarantee the personal and property safety of citizens, the weapons and some knives are strictly controlled by laws in China. Thus you are forbidden to take weapons with you in boarding the plane. Please contact us by dialing CSN selling service hotline 95539 if you have relevant problems..

May I take the lighter or match to board the plane?

No, the lighter and match are inflammable & explosive dangerous goods which can not be carried and registered.

May I take edible oil to board the plane?

You can not carry with edible oil since it belongs to inflammable & explosive dangerous goods . However, it can be registered after packing.

What items can not be carried or checked?

The passenger is prohibited from carrying or registering items including firearms, military or police arms (including main components) and their imitation parts, flammable and explosive items, toxic chemicals, perishable materials, radioactive items, controlled knives, strong magnetic items or items with strong pungent odor those may endanger flight safety or other items forbidden by national laws and provisions.

Responsibilities and Insurance

What is the liability for compensation of checked baggage?

The registered baggage delayed, damaged and lost due to the fault of the passenger will not be compensated by CSN. CSN is only liable for the delay, damage and loss due to the fault of its carrier.

What items will not be compensated?

Scope of compensation The loss, damage, pollution, shortage and delay of registered baggage will be compensated by CSN. The loss of unchecked baggage or carry-on baggage will not be compensated, unless otherwise it is proved caused by CSN.

 As the agent of other carriers, CSN will not compensate the loss of baggage transported by other carriers’ flights. However, CSN may accept the request for compensation and convey the request to the representative of the carrier. Moreover, CSN may assist the passenger in handling with the compensation and appoint the person in charge of transfer according to IATA.

CSN will not be liable for compensation for the loss incurred in following conditions:

Natural disasters or other reasons beyond the control;

Because of the compliance with the laws, provisions, orders of the People’s Republic of China and regulations on travel conditions, or because the passenger does not comply with these regulations;

The loss is caused by the defects or internal items of baggage.

The loss of baggage loaded with frangible, perishable items, precious metal, jewelry, gold and silver products, bills, securities, important documents, valuables and other prohibited goods will not be compensated under any condition. 

 The limit of compensation for the damage, loss or delay of baggage covered by preferential baggage allowance policy will be compensated based on the original baggage allowance (40 KG for first class, 30 KG for business class and 20 KG for economy class).

How to make a claim?

The claim shall be made in written form starting from 21 days after the date when the baggage should be handed over to the receiver to 180 days.

The compensation request shall be handled by the destination airport terminal or terminal where the accident happened.

Will the overweight baggage charge be refunded if the flight is changed or cancelled?

Yes. If the flight is changed or cancelled because of CSN and the passenger is arranged to take another flight with corresponding changes to the luggage. The overweight charge of baggage will be refunded for any overpayment but not be supplemented for any deficiency.

What should I do if the baggage is important but not so valuable?

The registered baggage with the value over RMB 100 Yuan per KG may be declared. The declared value of registered baggage can not surpass the actual value of baggage. The maximum value declared by each passenger is RMB 8,000 Yuan.

Baggage Damage or Loss

What should I do if the baggage is lost?

Please contact the staff at the airport service counter instantly right after the baggage is lost, otherwise searching for baggage will be more complicated. You may also dial our customer service hotline for more information.

What should I do if the baggage is delayed or damaged?

The delay, damage or loss of the registered baggage, except that whose value is declared and related charge is paid, will be compensated by the carrier, with RMB 100 Yuan/KG to the maximum. If the actual loss is less than the maximum limit, the compensation will be made based on the actual loss. You can resort to our workers at airport service counter for more information.

What should I do if the suitcase or clothes are damaged or lost?

Generally the loss or damage of carry-on baggage will not be compensated, unless it is clearly proved the loss or damage is caused by CSN. In such case, please contact the attendant or staff at airport instantly to help solve the problem. For more information, please contact the customer service staff.

How to inquire about the exact location of the lost baggage?

You may login the website of CSN to inquire about it.

Who should I contact if I left the baggage in the cabin?

When you find your luggage left in cabin after getting off the plane, please contact the staffs at airport service counter ASAP and they will assist you to handle this. 

Lost and Found

How to apply for the lost if I lose my luggage in taking CSN flight?

Please dial the service hotline 020-95539 of CSN call center or 020-86122921 of CSN Baggage Information Department in Guangzhou. After confirming the information, you may fetch the lost items at the appointed address. At present, the service is only available in Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport. Regulations for Lost Items Inquiry and Claim

The lost inquiry service was launched by CSN starting from July 2009. The passenger may dial the service hotline 020-95539 of CSN call center or 020-86122921 of CSN Baggage Information Department in Guangzhou. After confirming the information, you may fetch the lost items at the appointed address.

At present, the service is only available in Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport.

(II) Handover of lost items

The owner shall claim the lost items through ID card or other valid certificates. If another person is appointed by the owner to claim the lost items, the letter of attorney, ID cards or other valid certificates of the owner and its representative shall be provided.

(III) Attentions

1. 1. The lost items will be kept for 30 days in the luggage query department.

2. 2. According to the regulations of CAAC, the clothes etc. shall be disposed 30 days late, weapons shall be disposed by the police and cultural artifacts shall be handed in to the government. The valuables can be auctioned 90 days later. The fresh and perishable items can be disposed 24 hours later. The rotten foods shall be disposed instantly. The daily necessities (such as wet towel, toothbrush, potable water and eaten foods) can be disposed 48 hours later. The flammable or tainted items (such as lighter, gases, durian) will not be stored and kept.

3. 3. In consideration of factors relating to customs etc., the luggage query department will not accept the request for handling the lost items of the passenger taking an international flight.
